It was founded in 1896 by Christian social reformers Ballington and Maud Booth in New York City. Today Volunteers of America is active in more than 220 communities throughout the United States, helping over one million people every year.  Akeela, Inc. is a non-profit organization offering a comprehensive array of services for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, and alcohol abuse, in Anchorage, Alaska and other communities throughout the state.
Akeela was founded in 1974 by a group of concerned citizens and serves the community by striving to \"enhance the ability of citizens and their families to succeed in life.\"
All rehab program components are licensed by the Alaska Division of Behavioral Health and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities.\"

 Since 1898, The Salvation Army has been offering services that help individuals become physically, mentally and spiritually healthy. Today our ministry reaches 16 communities (and surrounding regions) stretching from Fairbanks south to Klawock. Under the leadership of Majors Doug & Sheryl Tollerud,a broad array of social services are offered, including providing food for the hungry, safe haven for abused children, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless recovery services to individuals battling addictions and relief for disaster victims. While often better known for its social service programs, The Salvation Army is, first and foremost, a church. Character building youth programs, Sunday School (for adults and children), Adult ministries for women and men as well as Sunday worship services are held weekly in most communities.
